Therapy with children

Children are rapid learners. They are quick to pick up new skills and new ways of coping. This makes them excellent candidates for therapy; positive change with a child tends to happen quickly. With children, I favor a straightforward, practical and evidence-based approach while also relying on the creativity, imagination and problem-solving that is innate in childhood.

Generally, my work with children begins with an intake assessment. I will meet with you and your child to discuss therapeutic goals and develop a treatment plan. We will then meet regularly for several months to work toward these treatment goals, process any additional items or concerns that come up and build new coping skills to replace unhealthy behaviors. I collaborate with parents frequently during treatment and help parents to implement and reinforce new skills at home.

My specialities include:

  • Anxiety
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Behavioral issues, including aggression, cutting and substance use
  • Management of chronic illness
  • Mood-related concerns
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Picky eating
  • Parent-child communication
  • School and academic challenges
